Confusingly Related Words !

There are words that cause problems when the speaker is not able to distinguish between them. They are similar in meaning or pronunciation but can not be used interchangeably. Learn the definition of each and its use before employing it in conversation.

ACCEPT (verb) - to take what is given
EXCEPT (prepositon) - excluding

ADVICE (noun) - opinion given to someone
ADVISE (verb) - act of giving an opinion

AFFECT (verb) - to produce a change in
EFFECT (noun) - end result or consequence

EMIGRANT (noun) - one who leaves one's own country
IMMIGRANT (noun) - one who comes to a new country

PRECEDE (verb) - to come before
PROCEED (verb) - continue an action after a rest period or interruption

PERSECUTE (verb) - torture
PROSECUTE (verb) - in legal terms
